Agritourism Roadmap Development and Project Local Coordination

Dec 2022 - Dec 2024

Objective 1: Develop a roadmap for agritourism development, defining a common understanding of agritourism, conducting a SWOT analysis, and mapping key public and private sector stakeholders, establish a shared vision and strategic objectives, prioritize key interventions through an operational action plan, and create momentum for stakeholder collaboration.

Objective 2: Coordinate project implementation on the ground, ensuring alignment with the local context and effectively managing stakeholder mapping to facilitate smooth execution.

Key Activities

  • Conducted in-depth assessment to identify intervention strategies and action plans aligned with the project's scope while avoiding duplication of existing efforts.

  • Held over 10 one-on-one meetings with key tourism stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector representatives, to:

  1. Identify past and ongoing sustainability and community-based tourism (CBT) initiatives.

  2. Assess challenges, lessons learned, and gaps in sustainability certification awareness.

  3. Explore existing CBT criteria and assess willingness to engage in sustainability networking.

  • Facilitated stakeholder consultations with:

  1. Academic institutions to evaluate sustainability integration in curricula.
Tourism authorities (PDTRA, JTB, MOTA, ASEZA, JITOA, etc.) to discuss policies, certification schemes, and sustainability initiatives.

  2. Development agencies (USAID, GIZ, Embassy of the Netherlands, etc.) to review previous efforts and explore areas for collaboration.

  3. Industry associations and private sector partners to assess their role in sustainability and CBT promotion.

  • Organized two focus groups targeting:

  1. CBT developers and service providers to discuss priorities, standards, sustainability practices, and challenges.

  2. Hoteliers from different classifications to assess internal sustainability policies, certification adoption, waste management, CSR programs, and marketing of sustainable practices.

  • Conducted a market survey with JSTA, JITOA, and JTB to evaluate:

  1. Awareness and adoption of sustainability practices and certifications among tourism stakeholders.

  2. Challenges in implementing sustainability measures and support needs to enhance sustainable operations.

  3. Potential for sustainable product development and the role of tourism associations in sustainability efforts.

  • Developed recommendations for sector-wide sustainability actions, emphasizing stakeholder commitment through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with clear roles and responsibilities.

  • Proposed an action plan and feasible intervention strategies to guide project implementation, ensuring stakeholder alignment and accountability.
